Richard M Denton FRS FMedSci- Classics Editor

Dick Denton is currently Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Bristol. His research interests have focused on the short-term regulation of mammalian metabolism, particularly the molecular basis of insulin action in fat cells and the role of calcium ions in the regulation of intra-mitochondrial dehydrogenases. He is a Founder Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (1998) and a Fellow of the Royal Society (1998).

He was awarded his PhD in 1967 by the University of Cambridge for studies carried out under the supervision of Professor Sir Philip Randle FRS. Since 1965, he has been in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Bristol, with some periods of research leave in Switzerland, USA and Canada. He was appointed to a Personal Chair in 1987 and was successively Head of Department (1995-2000), Chairman of Medical Sciences (2000-3) and Founder Dean of Medical and Veterinary Sciences (2003-4).

He has served on a number of editorial boards including that of the Biochemical Journal (1973-81) and on various research committees/boards for the MRC, DiabetesUK, the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society. He was a member of the Council of the MRC (1999-2004) and Chairman of the MRC Training and Career Development Board (2002-4).
