Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Award

Stephen Moran

Stephen Moran graduated top of his class in 2003 from Cambridge University with a BA and MSci in Natural Sciences. For his Masters thesis, Stephen performed kinetic and thermodynamic analysis of protein folding to probe folding transition states. Stephen then won a Wellcome Trust 4 year prize PhD studentship at Oxford University to work in structural biology. Stephen began working with Dr Robert Gilbert and Professor David Stuart on structural aspects of eukaryotic translation. In particular, he has performed cryo-EM reconstructions of mammalian ribosomes interacting with viral mRNA. This work revealed a mechanism for viral-1 frameshifting and was published in Nature in May 2006.
