The winner was Erin Norris from Sidney Strickland's Laboratory at The Rockefeller University, New York, with her poster entitled: 'Modulation of the tPA/PAI-1 System by Stress'. Biochemical Journal Editor Sharon Stack presented the award.


Ninth ASBMB Annual Undergraduate Student Research Award Poster Competition Winners

At the ASBMB Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA, 2-6 April 2005, the four winners were announced:

Ronald L. Coleman (California State University, Fullerton) Expression of single chain antibody variable regions against the botulinum neurotoxin in the unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Yun K. Kwon (Lebanon Valley College) Conformative responses in E.coli GMP synthase

Jordan M. Newell (Lebanon Valley College) Structural organization in E.coli GMP synthase

Each winner received a certificate, a cheque for $250 and some Biochemical Journal gifts.

The number of posters presented this year was a record 118; they were judged by a panel chaired by M. Benore-Parsons, P.A. Ortiz, J. Provost and M Wallert.

Young Investigator Awards presented at 39th SouthEastern Regional Lipid Research Conference, November 2004

Two Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Awards were presented at the 39th SouthEastern Regional Lipid Research Conference held in Cashiers NC from 3-5 November 2004.

The winners were Preeti Subramanian, Department of Biochemistry, Virginia Commonwealth University and Eric Lewis, Department of Biochemistry at Wake Forest University. Dr Sharon Schendel, Administrative Editor, Biochemical Journal US office, presented the awards.


Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Award presented in Quebec

Three Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Awards were presented at the Fifth Annual Joint Meeting of the Great Lakes GPCR retreat and the Club des Récepteurs à Sept Domaines Transmembranaires, held in Quebec.

The winners were Kevin Holmes, Robarts Institute, London, Ontario; Jennifer Bomberger, Michigan State University; and Celine Galés, University of Montreal, Quebec. Dr Richard Leduc, BJ editor, presented the Awards.

Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Award presented in Ontario

The Biochemical Journal sponsored a Young Investigator Award for a poster presentation at the 4th International Conference on Protein Kinase CK2: From Structure to Function and Regulation, held at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada, 29 July – 1 August 2004.

The posters were judged by Walter Pyerin (Heidelberg), David Meek (Dundee), Brigitte Boldyreff (Odense) and Isabel Dominguez (Boston). They were extremely thorough in their analysis and selected Won Jun Choi, a graduate student in the Department of Neurology, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago as the winner.

Won Jun Choi received a cheque for 500 US dollars and other Biochemical Journal gifts.
Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Award presented in Montreal

157 abstracts were submitted to the Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Award poster competition at the Second Messengers and Phosphoproteins Conference, Montreal, 3-7 August 2004. Of these, 10 finalists were selected and invited to present their key findings to the judges - Dr. Angela Clerk (Imperial College, London, U.K.), Dr. Bruce Allen (Montreal Heart Institute, Canada) and Professor Mike Walsh (University of Calgary, Canada).

The winner was Nicole Verrills of the Children's Cancer Institute for Medical Research, Randwick, NSW, Australia, for her poster entitled: "Mutant G-actin confers resistance to tubulin-targeted drugs: implications for regulatory cross-talk between microtubules and microfilaments".


Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Award winner announced

The Biochemical Journal sponsored a Young Investigator Award for a poster presentation at the recent FASEB Summer Research Conference on Phospholipases held in Tucson, Arizona, 17-22 July. Michael Wakelam, a Deputy Chair of the Biochemical Journal, presented the award to Sangderk Lee, from the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia, for his poster Cloning and Characterization of the Sphingomyleinase D of Loxoseles reclusa (brown recluse spider). He received a cheque for 500 US dollars and other Biochemical Journal gifts.
