Opt2Pay

Funding body mandates

Funding body mandates

Various research funding bodies now require their grant-holders to make the Version of Record (VoR) of manuscripts produced from work funded by them freely available immediately on publication (check your funding body's website for further details).

These funding bodies (such as BBSRC, MRC and Wellcome, amongst others) generally agree that the work that publishers do to co-ordinate the peer-review process and to produce manuscripts in formats appropriate to Web 2.0 costs money, and as such, have agreed to make funds available to their grant holders in order that they can pay to allow their work to be made freely available at the point of publication, as opposed to the delayed 'Open Access' of the existing subscription model.

Opt2Pay

Portland Press Limited are pleased to announce that all authors are now able to choose to pre pay to make the Version of Record of their journal articles freely available immediately on publication, on payment of a licence fee under a pay to publish option called Opt2Pay (O2P).

What's it all about and why are we doing this?

Please read our FAQs to find the answers to your questions. We've got a copy for authors and a copy for librarians

If you are a member of the Biochemical Society∗∗ or your institution has a subscription to the journal in which your manuscript will be published, you will qualify for a discount on the Opt2Pay fee.

The following journals, all published by Portland Press Limited, now have an Opt2Pay option for authors:

Biochemical Journal
Clinical Science
Bioscience Reports
Biochemical Society Transactions
Biology of the Cell
Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry

When your paper is accepted for publication, you will be given the option to pay to make it freely available at the point of publication.

Portland Press Ltd will submit the Version of Record of any Opt2Pay manuscript to PMC on behalf of the author(s).

NIH Grant Holders

Portland Press Limited Journals are compliant with the NIH mandate: authors may deposit their Accepted Manuscript* (AM) in PubMed Central immediately on acceptance with an embargo for public release of 12 months from the date of print publication.

For definitions of journal article versions, see the Recommended Practice of the National Information Standards Organization in Partnership with the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers.

∗∗ the corresponding author on the paper must have been an ordinary member of the Biochemical Society for two years.
