Fred Sanger: sequencing pioneer
Guy Dodson
National Institute for Medical Research, London, and University of York, UK

Guy Dodson selects some of the highlights of Fred Sanger's career, starting off with nitrogen metabolism and ending with DNA sequencing. In the interim, Fred Sanger published several manuscripts in the Biochemical Journal on the primary structure of insulin, determining the amino acid sequence of the insulin A and B chains and the disulphide bridges that link them together, a series of studies that earned Fred Sanger's first Nobel Prize.
